Flippin' Wisconsin

Why do I live in this god forsaken state? I ask myself this question every winter. But when summer rolls around, I soon forget about all the cold, shitty weather that I spent months enduring. It's like I somehow have a bout of amnesia. Summertime in Madison, WI has that effect on a people. It makes you forget about all the below zero wind chills, all the $300 MG&E bills and all the cycling hours that were logged indoors. On Saturday I found myself on the trainer for two hours, waiting for my bout of amnesia to come, pissing and moaning with every pedal stroke, cursing the city I live in. It's almost enough to kill my love of racing....but not quite.

Sunday was a little better. I wondered over to the Research Park crits. Seeing as my high end fitness hasn't been worked on yet, I decided to spectate instead of race. The Women's 4's had a pretty small showing due to the cold weather. I could only take about an hour of watching races before I was frozen solid. Next I headed over to my brother's house to defrost a little and address some of the issues that my race bike was having. I literally had to clean the cobwebs off the mountain bike - that's how long its been. Ryan helped me dial in the shifting, which is something I can never seem to properly do on my own. After tinkering around for a few hours, I headed back to my side of town and got ready for a three hour burner. Leaving for a ride after 4pm on a cold day is not the smartest (a.k.a. warmest) decision that has ever been made but I had a decent time (frozen feet not withstanding). I battled the cold and windy conditions in the rolling hills of Waunakee on my trusty cyclocross bike. The wind was an ass-beater and had me cranking up those hills at a whopping 7 mph. Suffer now or suffer later I guess...

I'm officially on vacation now. It should be a fun week of cycling, tinkering, exercising the dog, eating and drinking wine daily. Some of the best vacations are the ones where you just stay home.

way to get some riding in! what kind of bar is on your cross bike? do you like it? i need to change mine and am looking for something with a shorter reach and drop.

It's a 38cm Salsa Poco and it fits like a glove. I wish I had that bar on my road bike.

how tall are you? are your shoulders wide or narrow for your height, etc? i ask because when i do those fit kits on-line it always says i should be a 38 bar but i've always been apprehensive about getting one that small. i'm 5'4" and don't consider myself to have wide shoulders at all.

I'm 5'3" and my shoulders are pretty normal for my size (not wide). I've spent a good number of hours in the fit room at Cronometro for all of my race bikes and those bars are a perfect fit for me.

Also many drop bars out there might say that they are a 38cm, but are truly larger depending where you measure from. This is the case with the bars that are on my road bike which are a TTT Forgie (I think). I tend to not use the drops on that bike because they are a touch wide and flex my wrists too much.

props to you for riding this weekend! i didn't do anything atheltic this weekend unless watching roller derby counts.

are you really 2 inches shorter than me renee? i somehow thought you were taller than me. i really have to stop slouching.

and to enter this conversation, i have 38s on both my road and cross bike and would say i have very narrow shoulders for my height. i have salsa short and shallow's on the cross bike that i never ride and like them well enough. but honestly, i don't spend enough time on the bike to develop a strong opinion. i have a set of 38 cm ritchey biomax pro bars on my road bike and i LOVE that bar to death. the drop fits my hands perfectly and i really like the shape of it.

i think i may order me one of them. i never really thought of the drop of the bar being too wide causing too much flex- which is why i hate the drops on my bike. my wrists are like wtf.

Rachel,
I have the 38 Salsa Poco on both my road bike and cross bike and love them. Let me know if you want to cruise around on my bike to check them out.
